With the ubiquity of the Internet and smart phones blurring personal and professional life, employees increasingly are working online during their off hours. The flip side: Many are spending time at the office on personal activities, like catching up on their favorite television shows online. That's according to a survey conducted by Harris Interactive and commissioned by Qumu, a San Bruno software firm that develops video tools for businesses. The study, which polled 2,510 Americans age 18 and older, found that while at work, 25 percent watch news clips, 15 percent watch viral videos and 11 percent watch sports events and clips. Some have even more time on their hands: 9 percent watch television shows, 4 percent watch full-length feature films and 3 percent cop to viewing porn. Nearly 3 out of 4 respondents said they believe people will do things on their mobile devices they would not normally do on work computers. That's because they can be a lot more circumspect with their mobile gadgets. In fact, 63 percent believe that employees sneak a peak during work meetings, by hiding the device under the table, concealing it in a notebook, folder or papers - even pretending to tie their shoes. The rest, 37 percent, said they didn't expect employees to try to hide such activity. In almost all cases, workers most likely are tapping their employer's wireless Internet network for personal consumption, not realizing it could potentially compromise the system, said Qumu CEO Ray Hood. "It highlights the importance for businesses to get their arms around this now," Hood said. "Employees are bringing their own devices to work. You can't control what they're doing at home - or even at work. But what you need to do is have systems in place to mitigate problems it may cause, like clogging bandwidth." Just the same, the influence of YouTube isn't just on the viral videos that employees catch during work. More businesses are incorporating video as a tool for their operations, to conduct a company town hall with the CEO, to train workers or to hold meetings among far-flung employees. "There's such a pent-up need in organizations to communicate better and get messages heard," said Melissa Webster, program vice president of content and digital media technologies for IDC. "Reaching employees effectively has been a real challenge." Whether it's at the office, at home or on the go, watching online videos is now commonplace. Altogether, 64 percent watch online videos. Most of them, 43 percent, have done so at work. Meanwhile, businesses may be beginning to loosen up their rules about watching videos, checking Facebook or going online for other personal reasons. "We're seeing companies that previously banned employees from accessing Facebook or Twitter and other social media are opening it up. They're realizing it's a dead end," said Mark Ragan, CEO of Ragan Communications, a public relations company that uses Qumu to broadcast and rebroadcast its conference videos. "The more enlightened companies are realizing the two worlds of work and personal are blending together."
