While its share of the consumer market continues to dwindle, Research In Motion Ltd. is shoring up its status as a key supplier of secure devices to corporations and government. The BlackBerry maker said Monday that is smart card reader has won approval for use by U.S. federal government employees, a move that follows Washington’s certification of RIM’s PlayBook tablet PC early this year. “Our customers value the robust security provided with BlackBerry products and services and smart card readers are particularly important within the government sector,” Scott Totzke, senior vice-president of BlackBerry Security, said in a statement Monday. Waterloo-based RIM said the reader, which allows federal employees secure access to computers and BlackBerrys, has won the highest certification achieved by any wireless smart card reader. The RIM reader works with personal identification cards issued by government or other high-security organizations. Users insert a smart card into the reader and wear it around their neck as an authentication device for access to BlackBerry smartphones, desktop computers and related facilities. BlackBerry smartphones and desktop computers automatically lock when the user’s smart card is not nearby. The certification from the National Institute of Standards and Technology also verifies advanced security features of the reader itself, such as tamper evidence and self destruction of critical security parameters if the device is hacked. RIM said the cards support security programs including the U.S. Department of Defense’s Common Access Card program and the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12. The directive calls for a mandatory, government-wide standard for secure and reliable identification issued by the federal government to its employees and to the employees of federal contractors. Federal Information Processing Standard certifications are assigned by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce. RIM has been defending its leading position in the business and government markets for encrypted digital devices, announcing in January that the PlayBook was the first tablet certified for deployment within U.S. federal government agencies. But it is doing so while its share of the consumer market for smartphone and other devices shrinks in the United States, a development that has forced the company to reduce revenue and profit expectations for 2012. Data released by market research firm The NPD Group Monday showed Google Inc.’s Android operating system solidifying its hold on the U.S. smartphone sector, largely at RIM’s expense. Its latest data shows 52 per cent of smartphones shipped in the U.S. in the second quarter were runningw Google Inc.’s Android software, up 19 per cent year-over-year. Apple’s iOS claimed a 29 per cent share, a sharp increase from seven per cent a year ago, while the BlackBerry operating system’s market share fell to 11 per cent from 28 per cent over the period. Microsoft’s Windows Mobile declined to four per cent in this year’s second quarter ended in June, from 10 per cent in the second quarter of 2010 while Motorola Mobility’s overall mobile phone market share declined three percentage points, from 12 per cent to nine per cent from the year-earlier period.
