There are at least two contexts for judging the Canon Pixma MG8220 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-in-One ($299.99 direct). First, as big brother to the Canon Pixma MG6220 ($199.99 direct, 4 stars) that I recently reviewed, it offers essentially identical capabilities except that it adds the ability to scan 35mm slides and strips of film. Second, it's Canon's latest high-end home photo lab, meaning that it can print high-quality photos from so many different sources that you can reasonably use it just for photos without ever connecting to a computer. Either way, it's impressive enough to be the new Editors' Choice for high-end photocentric MFP. The MG8220 shares all of the key features of the Editors' Choice Canon Pixma MG8120 Wireless Photo All-In-One Printer ($299.99 direct, 4 stars) that it's replacing in Canon's line (although the MG8120 is still available at this writing). It prints, scans, and copies; extends the scan feature to include 35mm film (defined here as both slides and strips of film); and it expands the copy feature to let you print photos directly from film. In addition, it can print from a long list of other sources, starting with the usual: memory cards, USB memory keys, and PictBridge cameras. Less common options include both Photo Copy and Advanced Photo copy commands on the front panel that let you print high-quality copies of photographic prints. (There's also a standard Copy command for documents.) The front panel even offers an Online Album Print option, with choices for Canon Image Gateway and Picasa Web Albums. And as you would probably expect, you can preview photos on the printer's 3.5-inch LCD before printing. You can, of course, also connect to a computer, both for printing photos and for general-purpose printing. And as one final source for photos, Canon supplies software that lets you capture and print HD frames from any Canon HD PowerShot or EOS camera. Other features worth mention include printing on printable optical discs, automatic print duplexing (printing on both sides of a page), and two 150-sheet paper trays, which lets you keep both plain paper and photo loaded at the same time. The same comment applies to the ability to scan to a USB memory key or a memory card. However, the printer lacks such office-centric features as fax support or an automatic document feeder (ADF), which is part of what limits it to light-duty home office use at most. Speed and Quality The MG8220 offers both wired and WiFi connections as well as USB. For my tests, I connected with the Ethernet port and installed the driver on a Windows Vista system. Installation was standard fare. Not too surprisingly for a printer that focuses on photos, the MG8220's speed on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) wasn't particularly impressive. I timed it at an effective 2.9 pages per minute (ppm), which makes it essentially tied with the far less expensive Editors' Choice Kodak ESP C310 ($99.99 direct, 4 stars) as well as both the MG6220 and MG8120. It's also far slower than many other printers in its price range and below. The Epson Artisan 835 ($299.99 direct, 4 stars), for example, came in at 5.2 ppm. Output quality was essentially the same as for the MG6220, which puts the MG8220 at slightly below par for an inkjet MFP for text and graphics, but above par for photos. Text is more than acceptable for most purposes at 10 or 12 point size, but edges are a touch less than crisp, making small font sizes less readable than they could be. The same problem showed up with graphics. On one line graph with a black background, the thinnest lines were solidly filled in. However, all of our other test images were more than good enough for home applications or any business need, up to and including PowerPoint handouts. Photo output easily qualified as true photo quality, a step above drugstore print quality. It's not quite a match for more expensive near-dedicated photo printers, like the Editors' Choice Epson Stylus Photo R2000 ($499.99 direct, 4.5 stars), but most casual photographers should find it more than good enough even for photos they plan to frame. When I reviewed the Pixma MG6220, I suggested that if it offered just a little more, it could be an Editors' Choice. The Canon Pixma MG8220 offers all the same features plus that little bit more in the form of scanning film as well as printing directly from film. If you don't need to deal with slides or strips of film, by all means save a few dollars and choose the Pixma MG6220 or another printer instead. But if you need to scan film, the Canon Pixma MG8220 is both the clear choice and our new Editors' Choice for a full-function home photo lab.
