These days teenagers seem to be constantly connected to their cell phones but texting, let alone yacking on the ubiquitous gizmos would certainly be disruptive in the classrooms. But how about the corridors and the lunch room? For the first time this year, North Penn is allowing students to use their cell phones in the hallways, the cafeteria and in the courtyard, said Principal Burt Hynes. However the classrooms will remain cell phone-free zones. “The bottom line is, the kids carried cell phones, their parents texted them,” Hynes said. “This isn’t worth fighting.” Hynes said the school’s rule against cell phone use needed revision. Now “we have far fewer confrontations,” he said. “It’s a less antagonistic environment in the hallways. The students are very cooperative. They’ve been very respectful and they look at the rules around cell phones as reasonable.” Tomas Gimenez, 17, a North Penn senior from Lansdale, said, “I think the policy is fair. I don’t use my cell phone much in school ... It makes sense if the teacher is teaching, you shouldn’t use a cell phone.” “I think it’s convenient,” said Courtney Santos, 17, a senior from Hatfield. “Whereas last year a lot of people got in trouble for using their cell phones a lot. Now they can use them in the hallways.” Souderton Area High School began allowing students to use cell phones to text in the hallways and during lunch and study hall last year, updating a former policy of forbidding their use. Principal Sam Varano said it’s been working out well. We gave the students some freedom in between classes, at lunch and study hall. They are not allowed to talk but can text.” If they violate those rules there are punishments in place. “Those rules are pretty simple but challenging for some students,” he said. Allowing no phone use was “unenforceable.” He believes most of the texting is between students and their parents and “it allows us to run much more smoothly.” Sarah Kesack, 17, of Harleysville, a senior at SAHS, called the policy “a lot better than it used to be. I like how it works. If you need to communicate with parents or sports teams, you can do it without getting in trouble. It’s easy for me to communicate with my mom if I need her to bring me something.” But Kesack agrees that cell phones should not be used during class. “You’re supposed to be learning in class, not talking on the phone,” she said. At Christopher Dock Mennonite High School, the student senate voted for cell phone use in 2009 and a trial policy began the fourth quarter that year, said Martin Wiens, assistant principal. Because that worked well, the administration allowed it to continue. “We have shifted to allowing students to use (their cell phones) in between classes and during the lunch hour,” Wiens said. “They are not to use it during class time itself.” They can also make calls before or after school. “We have just found there is so much communication that’s happening,” Wiens said. “Parents wanting to communicate with son or daughter and to teach the kids how to use this technology responsibly. We want to be sure they are using the technology that is out there responsibly. We can’t pretend it’s not there.” Students at Lansdale Catholic High School can carry and use cell phones in the classroom but for educational purposes only, said Principal Timothy Quinn. It’s up the teacher to decide, he said. In the classroom students can use their phones for “Internet access and document revision,” he said. Students can also use their phones at lunch or in the hallway, he said. At Methacton High School students can carry their phones with them but are only allowed to use them during study halls, said Angela Lynch, a spokeswoman for the district. And Wissahickon High School began a pilot program last year allowing students to bring cell phones and iPads to study hall to connect to the Internet, according to Assistant Superintendent Chris Marchese. Other than that, he said, “We have a district policy that doesn’t allow for electronic devices on school grounds.” “The typical rule of thumb in none in class and no cell phone usage outside that study hall period,” he said.
